Focused session on Nano-Catalysts and Their Applications

 

Description: The significant upsurge in energy demand, pollution global warming and climate change are among the most critical challenges faced by modern society today. Consequently, rising concerns about their effects have led industries and governments to a constant lookout for green catalysts with superior performance, selectivity and lifespan for chemical processes, environmentally clean and renewable energy resources. Recently, advances have been recorded in catalysis as a result of the ongoing progress in nanotechnology that provides efficient approaches and advanced methods for the design, synthesis, application of structures, devices, and the control of shape and size at the nanometer scale.

These nanomaterials/ nanoparticles can be utilized as the catalyst or as support and can facilitate the catalytic process in new media such as, for example, water. Also, the evolution of Nan-catalysis offers tools to finely tune nanomaterial size/shape-dependent physicochemical properties such as electron affinity, oxidation state, and morphology… Thus, allowing to fully exploit the great potential of active materials and pave the way to endow remarkable catalytic performance and even novel functionalities. Clean energy production, environmental chemistry and clean processes can be provided by Nano-Catalysts since they play a pivotal role in purification and filtration of water and air from toxic contaminants, dyes and gas. Besides, they produce clean energy by polluting compounds conversion into clean fuels. The session main themes are:

Focused session on Nanotechnology for water treatment (Desinfection/ desalination)

 

Description: Nowadays, the world is facing challenges in meeting the rising demands of clean water as the available supplies of freshwater are decreasing and water pollution has become a global problem, owing to the high consumption of chemical substances, worldwide increased population and changing climate for which we need to find a solution. In this context, advances in nanotechnology suggest that many of the current problems involving water quality could be resolved and greatly ameliorated using nanocatalysts, nanosorbents, bioactive nanoparticles, nanostructured catalytic membranes and nanoparticle enhanced filtration resulting from the development of nanotechnology. Since it offers new opportunities in technological developments in order to supply drinking water:

  1. Ensure contaminated water disinfection by removal of sediments, chemical effluents, charged particles, bacteria and other pathogens.
  2. Desalinate seawater since it is the most abundant available source water.

 

Indeed, Nanotechnology refers to a wide range of tools, techniques, and applications that simply involve particles of an approximate size ranging from a few hundred to several hundred nanometers in diameter. Obviously, at this small size, materials behave unconventionally and have unique physicochemical as well as surface properties allowing new extremely interesting applications. Therefore, Nanotechnology is very promising for the creation of new methods that will more effectively eliminate and detect pollutants in water discharges than conventional methods. Indeed, this area of research could contribute to solutions for some of the major problems we face on the global scale such as ensuring a supply of safe drinking water for a growing population.This session will cover all the aspects related to the following topics:

Focused session on Nanotechnology for Photovoltaics

 

Description: Advanced materials and nanotechnologies are at the basis of new device concepts that look forward achieving a significant breakthrough in the cost efficiency of solar energy harvesting technologies, including main photovoltaic technologies. Existing challenges include the need for the combination of higher device efficiencies together with lower cost and more sustainable processes that have to be compatible with their scale-up to mass production levels with very low environmental impact, as well as with the availability of cost efficient energy storage solutions for efficient management of the solar energy production. The proposed session will bring together first level specialists from different materials and nanotechnology related fields, with special emphasis in those related to photovoltaics. The session will review the state of the art and the potential of existing and new materials and nanotechnology concepts for solving the main problems that are still limiting the mass deployment of solar energy renewable technologies looking forward the development and consolidation of a low carbon energy society. This session will cover the following topics:

Focused session Nanotechnology for Oil and Gas

 

Description: In the area of oil and gas industry the issue that can be solved by nanotechnology is the increase in the lifetime of various components together with the need for downtime reduction. Specific examples include pipe and tanker corrosion, drilling-bit wear, gas hydrate formation and marine fouling. The second type of industry pain revolves around filtration solutions based on nanotechnology. This includes the separation of different gas mixtures, the filtration of heavy metals as well as oil-water separation. Finally, we will quickly survey the impact of nanotechnology in a few other areas including the increase in catalytic activity and lifetime, usage of nanofluids as drilling muds and the potential impact of in-situ catalysis on the efficient exploitation of heavy oil.
