The last two decades have seen immense developments in the field of medical, sports, military and workwear, which have opened up new areas leading to market diversification for textile sector. After technical and functional textiles, smart and wearable textiles came into force a few years back. A key driver for this research is the fact that both textile and electronics fabrication processes are capable of functionalizing large-area surfaces at very high speeds.Textiles with fully integrated electronics for applications in medical and sports sector, composites and membranes, nonwovens, new weaving techniques, innovative textiles with multiple functionalities, surface functionalization, coating technologies and nanotechnology are the focus areas in textiles.

This session will give an overview on the history and the current developments in the field of functional, Smart and wearable Textile. It will provide a great opportunity to many scientists and companies to introduce the main trends and technological challenges faced in this field, promote recent research achievements, discuss and share their innovations and identify key challenges that are the focus of ongoing research. Participants will discuss fundamentals of smart textiles: textile fabrication methods and textile interconnect lines, textile sensor, and output device components and integration of commercial components into textile architectures. The following are the session main topics:

  • Smart Textiles
  • Functional and Adaptive Textiles/ multifunctionality
  • Nanotextiles
  • Shape/ colour/phase changing/ targeted delivery
  • Biomimetic
  • Self-regulating
  • Textile sensors, wearable sensors and devices
  • e-textiles
  • Pshychotextiles
  • Energy harvesting
  • Technologies for the Integration of Novel Functions
  • Intelligent manufacturing
  • New Connecting Technologies
